LALIFF: CINE LATINO IN L.A. 13 YEARS AND COUNTING

This past Sunday, October 11 at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was the LALIFF Opening Night and Gabi Lifetime Achievement Award Gala. From Sony Pictures Classics, “Broken Embraces” (“Los Abrazos Rotos”) will be the inaugural film. Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, the film stars Penélope Cruz, Lluís Homar, Blanca Portillo, José Luis Gómez, Rubén Ochandiano and Tamar Novas.

Two-time Academy Award® winner, Almodóvar will also be honored with the festival’s 2009 Gabi Lifetime Achievement Award. Almodóvar is the one of today’s most recognized filmmakers in the world. With his early films, he introduced to the world the faces and talent of today’s most successful actors from his country including Penélope Cruz, who has been his muse and star of several of his films, Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, and Javier Bardem. Actress Eva Longoria Parker will accept the award on his behalf.
